Hong Kong’s Tazmania Ballroom nightclub celebrated its first anniversary by putting the cherry on the cake. Voted the Best International Bar at the prestigious UK-based Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, the Ballroom nightclub picked up the award which is dedicated exclusively to recognising design excellence.
The uber-chic Lan Kwai Fong venue drips with Blofeldian glam in its mysterious dark, grotto-like walls of golds and black lozenges. Designed by the internationally-renowned designer Tom Dixon, has dined at the top table receiving top honours in the 2011 awards, among among a shortlist of ten hot new bars and clubs from the United States and Mexico to Japan, Brazil, Belgium and Switzerland.
Modelled to reflect a 1920s American speakeasy and suavity, with a class of quintessentially British private gentleman’s club, the concept was explored and implored by nightclub impresario Gilbert Yeung, who was inspired by fond memories of British boarding school and a hip ‘hangout’ of the same name he frequented at college in Canada. Every detail here—from the geometric chandeliers to the Cohiba cigar menu and even the staff dressed in Fred Perry and Doc Martens—has a chic edge. Meanwhile, the space itself is something of a chameleon: a set of gold-plated pool tables can be raised to the ceiling to reveal a dance floor that draws the city’s young, stylish clubbing set, who stay fuelled with the reliably strong drinks—the signature Funk Me Up is a vodka-based thirst quencher featuring Amaretto, Chambord and Midori. For a breather, relax on the banquette-lined outdoor terrace, before diving back in to party until dawn.
Winners were announced at an awards ceremony in Canary Wharf, London on July 7 – the same night as the club’s first anniversary. Tazmania Ballroom was selected by a highly influential panel of leading architecture, design, lifestyle & hospitality personalities, with a rooster of judges such as Ian Callum, Design Director of The Jaguar Car, and Conde Nast Traveller Magazine editor Sara Miller.
Since opening last year, Tazmania Ballroom has reaped widespread commendation in design magazines, and continues to attract international celebrities flying into Hong Kong – with a high-class guest list ranging from actor Hugh Grant, singer Coco Lee, James Valentine and Adam Levine of the band Maroon 5, to the Oscar-winning film producer Harvey Weinstein, this hot spot in Hong Kong is becoming just as famous as the stars themselves.
